Enteral nutrition, or EN, is used when the gut is still partially
working, but a person cannot eat or absorb enough nutrients to stay
healthy. EN is delivered directly into the stomach or intestine through
a feeding tube.
Enteral nutrition formulas are used as nutritional replacements for
patients who are unable to get enough nutrients in their diet. These
formulas are taken by mouth or through a feeding tube and are used by
the body for energy and to form substances needed for normal body
functions.
Patients with the following conditions may be more likely to need enteral feedings:
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)
Burns
Cancer
Infections, prolonged
Kidney problems
Liver problems
Lung problems
Metabolic disorders
Pancreas problems
Stomach problems
Surgery
Trauma
Vomiting, prolonged
Enteral nutrition formulas are available without a prescription. However, they should only be used under medical supervision.
